My work space

When we were building our "semi-custom" home, we decided to put a desk in the area between the kitchen and the dining room. This small space was supposed to be a butler's pantry, and since we have absolutely no need for a butler's pantry, we thought the space would be better suited for a small desk.

Now, a few years later, I think this is the best change we made to the original floor plan of the house.

Of course there are things I would change about it now, like putting the outlet under the desk, but all in all I am very pleased. We use this space all the time. We pay bills here, work on schedule stuff, make the grocery list, blog, and of course surf the net. The space is just big enough for a flat screen monitor (which my husband mounted on the wall), a keyboard, and a pad of paper.

Because I spend a decent amount of time here, I wanted to make it pretty. My original plan was to paint a diamond pattern on the walls - then I got scared and thought that might be too busy for me. I wanted something that I really enjoy looking at, so I decided to hang art and writings from my favorite artist - my 5 year old son. Now, the minimal wall space is completely covered with his work. Don't you just love it when they are learning how to sound out words, and everything is spelled wrong?. I know this phase will be gone much faster than I would like, so I will cherish this moment while I can.

I painted the cabinet doors with chalkboard paint (I have a thing for that). One side is for the weekly dinner menu, and the other is for the weekly schedule.

And behind the desk is our "calendar area". We have 4 calendars - the main schedule, my husband has 2 work calendars, and my son's school calendar. This is also the place for miscellaneous important papers, invitations, birth announcements, etc. I pretty much just tape these things on the wall.

One of my favorite works of art - 2 transformer renditions - one in "robot" form and one in "transformer" form.

What does your workspace look like? Does it function the way you want it to? Is it pretty?

  1. You are incredibly organized! We have a space in our kitchen that is meant for this type of thing, but we don't use it for that purpose, and we SHOULD. Because we need this type of work-space.

  2. Such a great area. My sister has a similar butler's pantry area and I think your idea of an office is great!

  3. You did wonders with that little space. I love the frames artwork by your son. That must make him feel so special to see that you surround yourself with things he made. And the chalkboard cabinets are great! Mine have a beadboard panel, so I'm going to have to figure out something else! Thanks for the inspiration.

  4. I like the little area you've created - great choice to do that instead of the pantry! Also love the idea of hanging your son's artwork. I have an office but for some reason find myself hiking my laptop out to the kitchen counter a lot of the time.
